Come hungry. As well as the shopping, the Fair has a line-up of food and drink to keep you going all day. There are fresh oysters and a glass of fizz, wood-fired pizza, warming soup and toasted sourdough, and handmade Mediterranean pastries. You can stop for a proper lunch, pick up something to eat as you browse, or take something home for an easy dinner at the end of a long day’s shopping. There’s plenty for vegetarians too. If you have any allergies or intolerances, please speak to the team at each stall before ordering.
This is the place for a festive treat. Oysters are served cold with toppings like a classic shallot mignonette, a Bloody Mary twist with Beluga vodka, or ponzu, mandarin and salmon roe. They’re also served hot: Rockefeller-style, Korean fried with sticky gochujang, or Hungarian-style with paprika and soured cream. For something more filling, there are battered monkfish tacos, spiced soft shell crab salad, creamy seafood chowder and loaded Cajun tater tots topped with crayfish. Drinks include Taittinger Champagne, Crémant de Bourgogne and kombucha, and the oyster-and-fizz combos are good value. You can also take unopened oysters home.
Roots + Seeds, from Cirencester Park, makes pizzas on a San Marzano tomato and fior di latte base. Choose a Margherita with fresh basil, a pepperoni classic, or the Greek-inspired option with red onion, olives and feta. For something heartier, The Deer Hunter has spicy venison sausage, mushroom, rocket and Parmesan. Prices run from £15 to £17.
These are good on a cold day. The soup is butternut squash, sage and honey (V). The toasties are made on Hobbs House sourdough: beef brisket with sauerkraut and wholegrain mustard, Jesse Smith Butchers ham and Cheddar, or pickled red cabbage with goats’ cheese (V). Prices run from £7 to £11.
Pull up a chair at the Potted Goose for Spanish charcuterie or cheese boards with Gordal olives and Pico breadsticks (£15). Drinks include French wines, Gratiot Pilliere Champagne, festive mulled wine, Hawkstone beer and cider, and Cotswold Distillery gin and tonics. Coffee, luxury hot chocolate and cakes are on hand too.
Hush Hush Chefs makes filo pastry quiches, pies, triangles and rolls. Fillings include spinach, feta and ricotta with pine nuts; beetroot, goats’ cheese and prune; aubergine with four cheeses; and honey-roasted ham with Somerset Cheddar. There are sausage, chorizo and vegan potato and spinach rolls too. You can add two of their fresh salads, such as Greek, bulgur wheat or barley and aubergine, to make a full meal. Loaf cakes and muffins are there for something sweet. Many options are vegetarian, and there’s a vegan choice.
